Movie Showcase 2026

Welcome to the Artists in Motion Movie Showcase!

Over the course of four weeks, students in grades K–5 learned the basics of stop motion animation, storytelling, photography, video editing, sound effects, and creative design using Canva and mixed media art.

Each student planned a story, created their own characters and backgrounds, photographed their scenes frame by frame, and learned beginner editing skills. Students were taught how to upload photos, organize media, add music and sound effects, create titles, and make simple edits to their movies. Final editing assistance was provided by the instructor to help bring each student’s vision to life.

If you have never created stop motion animation before, you may be surprised by how much work goes into even a short film! Many of these movies contain dozens of individual photographs that were carefully moved and photographed one frame at a time. Then skillfully edited to remove unwanted background objects.

Did you know?

It can take 10–12 photos to create just ONE second of stop motion animation!

A one-minute stop motion movie may require hundreds of individual photographs.

Popular stop motion films include Wallace & Gromit, Chicken Run, Coraline, The Nightmare Before Christmas, ParaNorman, Kubo and the Two Strings, and Shaun the Sheep.

Many LEGO® fan films and animations are also created using stop motion techniques.

Stop motion helps children develop creativity, storytelling, patience, problem-solving, sequencing, photography, and digital literacy skills.

You don’t need expensive equipment to make stop motion movies! A phone, tablet, toys, paper characters, or clay are enough to get started.
